Sketching, for practice and relaxation

Yesterday I drew two sketches while at RSPB Arne. Today I drew three more on the north end of Swanage Beach. Sketching for me helps me practice the skills of drawing and observation. Also for my mental health I focus on the drawing which relaxes me too.

Now that all but one commission are completed I have more time to just draw for myself. Some pieces may inspire other work or become pieces in the shop after lockdown but the primary purpose is to draw for its own sake.

I have also recently signed up on Reddit where there are a variety of communities where I can share my work. I don’t seek critique as my style has developed over five years of practice and that is the way I want it to continue to change.

Sketch 2 at Arne showing the very soft Sandy and pebbled cliffs at Shipstall Point on the southern side of Poole Harbour
The beach hut in the foreground has just sold for £55k, the area to the right had some land slips earlier in the year and is slipping again so the huts from there have been moved for the winter.
I had just Ed started drawing this view northwards along the bay when spots of rain of a very short shower smudged the ink on contact with the paper.
Finally a picture of the groyne I was stood by. It made me realise how some of the large planks spanned two or three upright posts. I included the Isle of Wight to the east but not the Royal Caribbean cruise ships we have become familiar with lying at anchor off our shore in 2020.
