I like spreadsheets.
I could stop there and let you speculate why such a statement in an art blog. When I was a teacher I spent several years late in my career doing more and more IT teaching with pupils but also training members of staff. One tool I used a lot for my record keeping was spreadsheets.
Since being an artist I have two main spreadsheets that I have developed. One is for my financial records and accounting which now allows comparisons from year to year by months. This year although not typical has been interesting to compare with the ongoing development of my business year on year.
The second is my stock record of especially: greeting cards, fine art prints and original art pieces. I am able to keep an eye on stock levels, when new print orders are needed. In previous years when I have had work in up to 5 locations I also know where the stock is, very useful.
Today I started the third. Artist equipment. I have been completing a colour chart to check the state of my markers and how many still work.

Now I am going to keep a stock record in a spreadsheet of my different pens – ProMarkers, fineliners and posca paint markers. It will take time to set up but in the long term help me to find particular colours and store so I can easily access each marker when it is needed or new markers need to be ordered.

Hopefully this will make finding and having an easy to check method to see how my pens are doing. Look out for future posts.

P.S. busy pens in sets and in sales etc, none of these markers cost more than £1.85 each, current rrp. £3.25 each. A skill in buying wisely.
