Memories on a box

The wooden boxes I have drawn on since doing the art have become for some clients / recipients memory boxes. Isomer recently have expressly been intended for that purpose some have become so.

I have a wooden sailing chest I drew on last year when Anne and I started our lockdown zoom sailing lessons and it still contains the two little boats made of card, paper and cocktail sticks with card arrows for wind and tide. It has been used as a prop in the shop.

Earlier this year in lockdown I was commissioned to produce the memory box for the teacher of Kingfisher class in West London. This was a bigger box and made me think that this was something I could repeat.

Then I drew JoH’s work box just last month – the Swanage views made me show links to pertinent things for me including a sailing race, not something that I had any real understanding of before.

I have just (almost) completed the latest commission which will be a gift. The focus Durlston Castle and country park and Victorian Pleasure Gardens on the southern side of Swanage. Again the box represents the location for the intended recipients but it is a park where we have walked a lot and again it links into personal memories too.

I have realised in the last few weeks working on these boxes that I greatly undervalue the time and energy put into them and should reappraise my pricing strategy as an artist as I put so much into the pieces of work. I am caught between wanting to make affordable accessible art but also recognising how far I have come as an artist producing a piece for others – I will resolve this overtime I am sure.
