Saturday is shop day
Hi, so yes another shop shift and another positive day with great conversations with visitors, working on a new piece of art and some encouraging sales.
The weather was cooler but dry until the last hour so when not welcoming visitors in the shop I sat outside and started a new piece which has been developing in my head in terms of approach – a summer trees piece. Based on photos taken up in Durlston Country Park to the south of Swanage like the “Last of the Leaves” piece. This is going to develop through a series of layers.
Layer 1 – tree outlines in fineliner based on the photo

Then colour in these using promarker – this work led to a number of comments from passers by and questions about the techniques.

Add in the shaded leaves using a dark green (Holly) after first adding the outlines in fineliner, this is where artistic interpretation takes over from a copy of a photograph.

Then once that layer is complete starting to add the next layer of leaves in the top left corner which are more olive green in colour. This is where I got to today.

Other conversations about ProMarkers, one older gentleman who used to paint in oils but finds the process of getting all the gear out has stopped him painting recently bought a set of 12, he returned to buy a postcard art pad. 90 minutes later he was back as the blue in the pack was too dark for his sky, chat ensued with recommendations of places to buy more pens – he went away with a second (different) set of markers and as already enjoying the freedom to just draw.
Later this afternoon the Jungle hat sold as a present from parents to a young man. Sad to see it go, in that it has been a great prop for discussing art with younger children.
The chance to talk about art, business, Swanage, the central area of the town, the dog friendly scheme all bring me great joy. A day to include sailing tomorrow and then back at the shop on Monday to Wednesday next week.
