March 10 prompt for #MarchMeettheMaker. I told people in my Instagram post that I would give more detail about this series of photos. I also then amended my post as the newest aspect of marketing I am going to try is linking into Influencing – do I fully understand what it might involve – yes to some extent but as always my aim is to appeal to a wider range of people. Art does not have to be stuffy, it’s can be fun and I am trying that idea out.
Those of you who know me back to my teaching days know that from 2012 to 2016 I was very keen about a pedagogy (teaching / learning theory) called Solo Taxonomy and I found myself stopping myself from explaining it but showing how it can link to anything. Back to the art …

What’s in the picture? Well I am outside a shop window, yes shop I share. So drawing in fresh air. My outfit is all hand decorated. The hats and suit above the waist by me and the lower half of the suit by the year 3 and 4 classes I worked with at Swanage Primary School previously. I have a box of pens beside me so passers by de art work being made live. Also the Tilly Mead courtyard has lots of plants – a great place to visit especially for Java the cafe opposite.
Jungle hat I was drawing in photo 1, this had no pre planning I just started with theme jungle in my head and added to it as I went. What can you see on the hat?a track, puddles, rocks, a snake, signs, a tiger, palms and other greenery, a fire…
Rescue – was it a real rescue? No, first practice in August 2020 apparently. RNLI uniform, winch an outfit, coastguard chopper, what was the condition of the sea? How did I try to show that using pens? What is the land in the background? Ballard Down and the rocks dipping towards Old Harry Rocks, Studland. Other little details, checking I had the permission of the photographer to use their image, it is being used to raise funds for Swanage RNLI lifeboats station who featured a lot in the last series of Saving Lives at Sea.
The Golden Hind replica in dock in London on the South Ba in and where the person who commissioned the card had his first date with his wife /(Valentines card commission 2021). Building details, crane, rigging on the ship. For me this also triggers many memories of walking along the South Bank on day trips to London when I lived in Essex pre 2016.
My second sunset piece drawn near Kingston (Village in Dorset). I had been working on the detail in my tree drawings (see March 7 post). The colours in the sky.
Jurassic beach postcard, original drawn at A4 size and made it up as I drew it trying to show the idea of modern activities on the sea and the geology and fossils beneath. The gulls, the diver, buoys as I was on a course for kayaking at the time and had just learnt these, a shipwreck on the seabed…
Last of the Leaves – this is a lockdown 2 piece and will have prints made and cards to grave in the shop by the end of April hopefully. Based on looking up at the trees in Autumn in Durlston Country Park, Swanage. Again links back to working on my tree detail. It’s a table with lots of colours named. It is in fact one of stock audits where I make a chart add all the colour names in my ProMarker pens and then colour to creat a chart I can refer to when deciding which tone to use in a particular drawing. The chart includes over 170 colour pen options.
My first commission a miniature canvas drawing of part of Snowdonia. It came with the easel stand. Drawing at this scale is hard but I enjoy the challenge the canvas is 9 x 7 cm.
I have drawn two commissioned woodworker aprons. Both are used by their owners when making and feature drawings of their personal work tools and quotes favoured by the crafts person. Fine details include the screw head in the handle, the knurled knob to tighten the plane blade.
So there we are 10 examples seeing small details in my work. One of the most enjoyable things is being asked by visitors how I draw particular things, or use the ProMarkers or why that scene. As they are all my work they all have a back story which I can share. In the case of Photo 3 Rescue I have met several members of the crew who were onboard at the time, members of their families, what was happening and it makes the piece even more interesting for me.
