That piece I started on Saturday, well …
So, on Saturday June 19th I started a new A3 piece based on the idea of trees in full leaf in the summer based on some photos I had taken at Durlston Country Park on the south side of Swanage a couple of weeks ago.
I started by developing the piece in layers as the picture built up. The picture below is the original line drawing using a Staedtler pigment fine liner 0.05 while looking at my photos.

The next layer adds colour to the tree trunks and larger branches.

Then I started to add leaf layers, starting with the dark green leaves in shadow.

Then a layer at a time (3 in the end) are added using progressively lighter greens.

The last two layers include a rough leaf patterned area.
Finally overdrawing twig lines onto the leaf layers. After the first green shaded layer the piece depends more on artistic interpretation than trying to create an accurate record of a photograph.
Finally this afternoon after three hours work today I have a completed piece. I was unsure whether to add a blue to show the sky – but I have decided the use of negative space (did I use term correctly) and not adding colour is more effective, I have titled the piece “Summer leaves” and follows my lockdown piece “Last of the Leaves” which is already proving very popular.

Why trees? Why looking up?? Because I love being around and under trees and in my role as a geography teacher I was always keen to encourage young people to look around them more, to notice their surroundings – this follows that idea.
Once I can arrange with my printer the original, prints at A3 and A4 size and cards will go on sale.
Feedback welcomed.
